Election Guide – May 2011

Here is my election guide for the primary elections in May of 2011.

It is less neat than usual, partly because it has been completed at the  last minute. Bold candidates are the ones I am endorsing.

PA Superior Court Judge, DEM candidate

David Wecht

PA Commonwealth Court Judge, DEM candidate

Kathryn Boockvar

Kathryn was endorsed by the newspaper. She has support from the bar association as being well-qualified.

Barbara Ernsberger

Barbara was not endorsed by the newspaper. She is overtly political (not a good thing in Judges, I believe). She was found not qualified by the bar association.

Court of Common Please Judge, DEM candidate (pick 5)

Nathaniel Nichols

Endorsed by the Democrats. Law Professor. Non-partisan. Endorsed by the Republicans also! Considered well-qualified by the Bar association.

Michael Schleigh

Democratic politician and lawyer. Not recommended by the bar.

Sally Ann Heckert-Bikin

Lawyer who filed as and was endorsed by the Democrats. Not recommended by the bar.

G. Lawrence Demarco

Lawyer who filed as and was endorsed by the Democrats. Not recommended by the bar.

G. Michael Green

Former DA. Republican candidate (but has also cross-filed as a Democrat). Has good funding for his campaign, and nice campaign website and such. Rated well-qualified by the bar.

John Capuzzi

A current Judge. Republican candidate (but has also cross-filed as a Democrat). Rated well-qualified by the bar (always a little questionable for sitting judges).

Spiros Angelos

Republican candidate (but has also cross-filed as a Democrat). Rated well-qualified by the bar.

Christine Cannon

Republican candidate (but has also cross-filed as a Democrat).

NOTE: As you can see, for this election I have NOT followed my usual practice of considering the candidate first and the party recommendation as only one (minor) factor. The reason is that I think it is good to have multiple candidates on the actual (November) ballot. So I have chosen to vote for the candidates endorsed by the Democratic party. That does NOT necessarily mean I would be supporting them in November

County Council Member, DEM candidate (pick 3)

Lin Floyd

Jayne Young

Keith Collins

County District Attorney, DEM candidate

M. Kendall Brown

Township Commissioner (Ward 5), DEM candidate

Darin Hayton

School Director DEM candidate (pick 5)

Coleen Bennett

Maxine Murdoch

Joseph Martin

Lawrence Feinberg

Patricia Giambuzzi

A refreshingly open mind regarding incumbent judicial candidates !

Or did you mean that the Bar may be loath to sully the reputation of a judge who will decide their cases ?

That’s an interesting hypothesis, and probably a testable one, if the data is readily available.

    Roy:

All I meant is that even though the voting by the bar is anonymous, I still believe that sitting judges are rarely judged as harshly by lawyers as others who have not served as judges.
